Where to Eat Near Copenhagen’s Landmarks in 2026, From Tivoli to Parken

Follow the city’s sights and its kitchen clocks, from Danish lunch near the palaces to street food at Tivoli.

TL;DR

In Copenhagen, plan the meal around the kitchen clock: herring at Restaurant Amalie, a ramen bowl at Slurp Borgergade or a burger at Gasoline Grill. The old city’s lunch kitchens stop between 15:00 and 16:00, so eat a seated Danish lunch first and see the afternoon sights after.

At 11:27, the King’s Guard leaves its barracks at Rosenborg for Amalienborg when the King’s Guard is in effect. The soldiers pass the Round Tower and cross Kongens Nytorv before noon. Follow them and you have a morning’s sightseeing on a single walk. Lunch is where the timetable gets tricky.

The kitchens serving herring and smørrebrød along the route start closing between 15:00 and 16:00. That gives a castle and a lunch room very different deadlines. Put a Danish lunch in the middle of the day; if you would rather stay out among the sights, keep a counter or a food hall for later.

Where Should You Eat Near Copenhagen's Landmarks in 2026?

Most plates along this route cost between 100 and 235 kroner. Which meal you get depends on the time you arrive, because the old city runs two kitchen clocks.

The seated Danish lunch rooms keep the early one. Slotskælderen’s kitchen stops at 15:00, Lumskebugten takes its last lunch guests at 15:00, Restaurant Amalie’s kitchen closes at 15:45, and Café Petersborg and Paludan Bogcafé serve lunch until 16:00. For later meals, Torvehallerne is open to 19:00 on weekdays, the Broens winter market’s food stalls to 20:00 and Tivoli Food Hall to 22:00.

That gives the day its shape. Have the herring and smørrebrød while the old rooms are cooking, between 11:30 and 15:00, and keep the counter meal for the morning, the late afternoon or the evening. The walk follows the guard's march from Rosenborg to Amalienborg, carries on to Nyhavn, then leaves the old city for Tivoli, Carlsberg Byen and a match night at Parken.

Where Should You Eat Near Rosenborg Castle and the King's Garden?

The march starts here, because the Life Guard's barracks sit at Rosenborg. Christian IV began the garden in 1606 and built Rosenborg beside it as his favourite small castle; it now holds the crown jewels. Until 23 December the castle is open 10:00 to 16:00 from Tuesday to Sunday and closed on Mondays.

The King's Garden began as Rosenborg's park and kitchen garden and now draws more than three million visitors a year. By the castle shop there are picnic tables for anyone who brings lunch, which makes the first meal of the walk a packed one.

Where Can You Pick Up a Picnic for the Garden?

Torvehallerne at Frederiksborggade 21, has more than 60 stalls and is open 10:00 to 19:00 on weekdays and 10:00 to 18:00 at weekends, so it is open whenever the castle is. Two of its stalls are worth the walk on their own.

The porridge bar Grød opens at 7:00 on weekdays, before anything else on the walk, and at 9:00 at weekends. Its founder, Lasse Skjønning Andersen, opened the first Grød on Jægersborggade on 24 September 2011 after finding that porridge could be savoury, as risotto, daal and congee are, and all three are still on the menu. From 11:00, the chicken congee at 119 kroner is rice porridge with hoisin-marinated chicken, kimchi kale, crushed peanuts, spring onions, sesame oil and coriander. The red daal at 99 is a lentil porridge with cherry tomatoes, salted almonds and Icelandic yoghurt, and the classic oat bowl at 79 carries caramel sauce, fresh apple and roasted almonds.

The other stall is built on dough. Rosio Sanchez, a former dessert chef at Noma, opened the taco shop Hija de Sanchez in 2015, and the taqueria puts the secret of a good taco in the masa its tortillas are made from. The fillings change with the season and the cook's taste, so there is no fixed order to learn. From 10:00 to 12:00 the stall serves a breakfast burrito of egg, cheese and coriander in a wheat tortilla with salsa roja. It opens at 10:00 every day and closes at 19:00, or 20:00 on Fridays.

Is There a Sit-Down Bowl Near Rosenborg?

A picnic suits a dry day. When it rains, or the castle has shut for the day, Slurp Borgergade at Borgergade 16 is the warm room nearby. Lunch runs from 11:30 to 15:00, and the evening service starts at 17:00, an hour after Rosenborg closes, and runs to 22:00.

A crowdfunding campaign helped build this room. Slurp opened its second ramen bar here in January 2025, and the campaign page shows 1,054,500 kroner raised against a goal of 500,000 for equipment, interior and training. It has 36 seats, takes no reservations and welcomes dogs.

Start with the Karaage Chicken at 120 kroner, deep-fried chicken with Japanese mayonnaise, and share it while the bowls come. Bowls run from 175 to 195 kroner. The Nduja Miso at 195 is a creamy chicken broth with spicy nduja butter, minced pork, a soft egg, spring onions, pak choi, bean sprouts, an anchovy lemon dressing and burnt onion oil, and the menu suggests the 60-kroner amazu plate of pickled carrots, daikon and cucumber beside it.

Where Can You Eat Near the Round Tower and Strøget?

From Rosenborg the march passes the Round Tower, and this stretch has both a breakfast counter and a lunch kitchen that stops at 15:00.

A few hundred metres south, Strøget began in 1962 as an experiment that shopkeepers feared. Their warning was "No cars means no customers and no customers means no business". The street soon proved a success, and its 1.15 km are still the city's main shopping route.

Where Can You Start the Day Near the Round Tower?

Gasoline Grill Købmagergade, at number 23, sits on the street leading south from the Round Tower towards Strøget. It opened in April 2025 in the building that once housed the Falafel House, and it starts at 7:30 with breakfast, two and a half hours before Rosenborg opens. At Købmagergade, our breakfast sandwich costs 95 kroner: salsiccia or a Matr patty with egg, cheddar and vegetables in butter-toasted potato bread from Andersen Bakery. A cardamom roll made from the potato bun dough costs 35, and a Prolog filter coffee 25.

At 11:00 the grill takes over, and the Cheeseburger is the one to order. We call it The Benchmark: beef, creamy cheddar, red onion, pickles and Gasoline Grill Sauce, 110 kroner, with an extra patty on request. There is seating indoors and out, and no reservations.

Where Can You Have a Danish Lunch Off Strøget?

This is where the lunch clock first runs out. Slotskælderen hos Gitte Kik at Fortunstræde 4 has served lunch since 1910, in a building from 1797, and before it was a restaurant the cellar held a small aquavit distillery. Herring still leads the menu, where dishes start at 105 kroner: marinated with egg, curried, or blackcurrant herring with horseradish salad. After it come frikadeller with potato salad and roast beef with béarnaise cream, and the house snaps of sea buckthorn, dill or elderflower keeps the distillery in the room. The restaurant is open every day from 10:00 to 17:00, but the kitchen cooks only from 11:00 to 15:00, so a herring lunch here belongs before the afternoon, not after it.

For a later lunch, look among the bookshelves. Paludan Bogcafé at Fiolstræde 10 to 12, is a café and second-hand bookshop dating from 1895, where students, locals and travellers eat among the shelves, and it serves lunch until 16:00. On the menu, two poached eggs on toasted rye with guacamole, goat cheese, pomegranate and almonds cost 118 kroner. The stjerneskud at 139 is the Danish shooting star: pan-fried and steamed plaice with shrimp, green asparagus and mayonnaise on toasted bread. Groups of six or more can book; smaller groups walk in.

Where Can You Eat Between Kongens Nytorv and Amalienborg Before the Kitchens Close?

The march crosses Kongens Nytorv next, and the square offers a drink before it offers a meal. Hviids Vinstue at number 19 has poured since 1723, which makes it Copenhagen's oldest wine bar by its own account, and its dark rooms have seen out the city fires of 1728 and 1807. It opens at 10:00 and is a place for a glass. From 11 November at 11:00 that glass is the house gløgg, first served in 1954 and still made to Werner Hansen's recipe: red wine and port steeped with raisins and spices from May, with raisins as the only sweetener, then cognac and dark rum, and fresh raisins and a whole almond in the glass.

Where Can You Get a Casual Meal Near Kongens Nytorv?

For food, head to Gasoline Grill Landgreven at Landgreven 10, the first Gasoline Grill. Klaus Wittrup built it with his father Peter and the in-house handyman Mikse, and it opened on 26 April 2016 under green tiles by Made a Mano. The seating is all outdoors, so it suits a dry lunch or an early burger after work better than a wet evening.

Order the Butterburger here, a classic from the American heartland: beef, red onion and pickles finished with a big schmear of salted butter, for 110 kroner on the Landgreven menu, with a homemade lemonade with a touch of elderflower at 35. The Green Burger at 100 is built on the season's vegetable, Portobello at the moment, cooked to order and served with cheddar, tomato, lettuce, red onion, pickles and herb oil. The doors open at 11:00 and close when the beef runs out.

Where Is a Good Place to Eat Near Amalienborg?

The guard reaches Amalienborg just before noon, and the old lunch rooms around the palace open at 11:30, so anyone who follows the soldiers arrives in time for lunch. The four palaces were built from 1750 as the centrepiece of Frederiksstaden, and the royal family moved in in 1794. The museum in Christian VIII's Palace is open 10:00 to 16:00 from Tuesday to Sunday until 23 December, and closed on Mondays. The lunch rooms nearby have stopped serving by the time it closes, which is the reason to eat before the museum rather than after it.

Restaurant Amalie at Amaliegade 11 occupies a house the cooper Jan Jansen built in 1754 and 1755 to drawings by the architect Nicolai Eigtved. The cellar has had several lives: ship's chandlery, porter's lodge and, from 1931 to 1940, a theatre café, before it became the Restaurant Amalie of today in 1986. It is open Monday to Friday 11:30 to 16:00 and Saturday 11:30 to 17:00, closed on Sundays, with the kitchen stopping at 15:45. On the menu, pickled herring with onions, capers and fresh dill costs 124 kroner, Amalie's Schnapps Specialty of spiced herring, homemade curry salad and boiled egg 135, and a fried plaice fillet with tartare sauce and lemon 159. Most dishes come with a suggested beer and aquavit, and you can turn up without booking.

Café Petersborg at Bredgade 76, dates to 1746 and took its name from the Russian consulate that once sat in the building and the Russian sailors who ate here on shore leave. The cooking stayed Danish. Lunch runs from 11:30 to 16:00, Monday to Saturday, and warm frikadeller with red cabbage and pickles cost 125 kroner, warm fried herring 119 and a warm fish fillet with remoulade 138. Two people can go further with the Czarens platte at 345 kroner each: marinated and spiced herring, warm fish fillet, roast pork with red cabbage, warm liver pâté with bacon and mushrooms, chicken salad and two cheeses. From Wednesday to Friday the kitchen comes back from 17:00 to 21:00, which gives a late walker a second chance at a Danish plate.

Lumskebugten at Esplanaden 21, grew up as a sailors' tavern by the old Customs House and the Lion Gate, where people said goodbye to Denmark or stepped ashore after long voyages, and it counts its history from 1854. Its name comes from the shifting sandbanks that could ground ships whose crews did not know the bay. It keeps the same early clock as Slotskælderen: lunch starts at 11:30 from Monday to Saturday, the last arrival is at 15:00, and on Sundays lunch starts at 12:00 with the last arrival at 14:00. On the lunch menu, pan-fried fish fillet with coarse remoulade and lemon costs 195 kroner and roast beef with remoulade, crisp onions and horseradish 180. The Lumsk havstryger at 150 stacks sardines, spiced herring and egg yolk on toast.

Where Can You Eat Near Nyhavn After the Lunch Rooms Close?

Nyhavn runs from Kongens Nytorv down to the harbour. Once the traditional lunch kitchens close, follow the water across the Inner Harbour Bridge for a less formal meal.

Across the Inner Harbour Bridge, Broens Street Food at Strandgade 95 is a seasonal market. Its summer street food season has ended, and until 21 February 2027 the square is Broens Skøjtebane, an ice rink with food stalls beside it serving street food from around the world, from light snacks to hearty winter meals, every day from 12:00 to 20:00. The market's stall list runs from bánh mì to Argentine empanadas and Mexican corn tacos, but the winter line-up is not published, so choose when you get there. Skate hire with entry costs 65 kroner an hour, tables are not reserved, and the bars pour mulled wine, hot chocolate with whipped cream and Irish coffee to at least 21:00. The stalls are closed on 24 and 31 December and 1 January, and they take card or cash.

For a burger, cross back over the Inner Harbour Bridge and walk up to Gasoline Grill Landgreven. We open at 11:00 every day.

Where Can You Eat Inside and Next to Tivoli Gardens in 2026?

Tivoli sits off the guard's route, beside the Central Station, and its Food Hall keeps cooking until 22:00. The gardens themselves are between seasons. They reopen for Christmas on 13 November at 11:00 and run to 3 January, with a Christmas market in the stalls, Father Christmas in his house by the Open-Air Stage until 23 December and all the rides running.

Tivoli Food Hall at Vesterbrogade 3 is the one that needs no ticket, with free access from the street. It opens from 11:00, with a direct door into the gardens beside the main gate. At Dhaba, start with Indian small dishes such as pakora, bhaji and samosa. They come family-style, handy if you want to share a few bites before heading into the gardens.

Inside the gardens, Gasoline Grill Tivoli opened in June 2021 at the end of the Open-Air Stage lawn, in a trapezoid building from 1997 that was first made for the Valhalla Borgen amusement. The Copenhagen studio Archival Studies redesigned it around the idea of a burger cathedral, and guests eat indoors or on a terrace over the gardens. The latest menu Tivoli links, from October 2025, is short: the Original Burger, Cheeseburger, Green Burger and Butterburger cost 110 kroner each, a burger with fries and a soda costs 180 and the Kids Burger 100. A Spiked Lemonade with a hint of elderflower costs 95, and the table-sized Double Trouble at 635 brings two burgers, two fries and six draft beers. Orders are pick-up only, with no pre-orders and no reservations. Opening is listed as 11:30 every day until the beef sells out, but its branch page also reads "Closed until March 27th", with no year. Service during Tivoli's Christmas season is unconfirmed, even with the gardens open, so do not build a visit around it. The ticket-free Food Hall is the safer Tivoli meal, and Gasoline Grill Carlsberg Byen, the next stop on this walk, opens every day at 11:00.

Where Can You Eat in Carlsberg Byen?

Carlsberg Byen is the other trip off the route, and its old brewery quarter covers both clocks. J.C. Jacobsen moved his brewery to Valby Bakke in 1847 and named it after his son Carl and the hill. The ground stayed closed to the public for 160 years, and beer production left for Fredericia at the end of 2008. The brick halls now hold restaurants.

Aamanns Genbo at Kildepladsen 6, keeps the lunch clock: smørrebrød at 105 kroner a piece, every day from 11:30 to 17:00, with the last order at 16:00, before dinner from 17:30. Adam Aamann opened the first Aamanns in 2006, when smørrebrød was not something self-respecting chefs concerned themselves with, and sourdough rye is still the foundation of every piece. Genbo plays with the classics: herring comes with curry salad and roasted buckwheat, chicken salad with crispy chicken skin, and beef tartare with a browned-butter emulsion and crispy potato.

SURT at Bag Elefanterne 2, keeps the evening one, open 12:00 to 21:30 every day, and as a rule a table is yours for 1 hour 45 minutes. It opened in December 2019; its founder Giuseppe Oliva worked six years as a sea captain, and his family has made bread since 1941. He calls Carlsberg Byen a historical fermentation site, a fitting home for sourdough. The dough uses ancient grain varieties and bakes in an oven built on site. The Marinara at 165 kroner is Siccagno tomato sauce, garlic, oregano, olive oil and fior di sale, the Margherita at 175 has Siccagno tomato sauce, buffalo mozzarella and basil, and Shrooms at 235 sets blue oyster mushrooms on buffalo mozzarella with garlic and herbs.

Gasoline Grill Carlsberg Byen opened in May 2019 on Bryggernes Plads. Studio Hessian describes a refurbished brick structure in a granite-cobbled square: the open room has exposed steel tie beams and a long zinc-topped counter, the walls are limewashed, and in summer the bifold doors open onto the square. Take a seat at that counter for the Original Burger, the one that comes all the way, with crisp lettuce, a slice of tomato, red onion, pickles and Gasoline Grill Sauce, for 110 kroner on the Carlsberg Byen menu. The Cheeseburger and Butterburger cost the same and the Green Burger 100, and this branch also serves the Hot Chicken Sandwich from 130, which Landgreven does not. Seating is indoors and out, and there are no reservations.

Where Is Best to Eat Before a Match at Parken? Gasoline Grill Parken

Gasoline Grill Parken, at Øster Allé 56 by the national stadium, is the pre-match stop. It opened in September 2022 in partnership with Parken and F.C. København, sells a Cheeseburger for 110 kroner and a Hot Chicken Sandwich from 130, and also serves burgers inside the stadium on match and concert days.

The ground is older than its name. The pitch was inaugurated on 25 May 1911, when a Copenhagen XI lost 3 to 2 to Sheffield Wednesday, and the stadium took the name Parken in 1992. It seats 38,065 for football and holds about 50,000 for concerts with standing on the pitch.

As of 4 November, the next home games are FC Iberia 1999 on Thursday 5 November at 21:00, Brøndby IF on Sunday 8 November at 12:00 and FC Midtjylland on Sunday 29 November at 16:00. On big days Øster Allé can be closed or very busy, and the nearest metro stops are 500 to 600 metres away, so a counter at the stadium's own doorstep saves the detour.

The dish to order here is the Hot Chicken Sandwich, a Nashville-style chicken with a Korean accent: you choose the heat, and it comes with homemade coleslaw, pickles, lettuce and Gasoline Grill dressing. The thigh is deboned, because Gasoline Grill likes the texture, taste and juiciness of the brown meat. It is marinated, cooked sous-vide and then fried, and it stays pink on purpose, fully cooked, as the Parken menu says.

Seating is outdoors only and there are no reservations. The doors open at 11:00 every day and close when the kitchen sells out, so a 12:00 kick-off leaves an hour at the counter, and for an evening match, go early.

Which Landmark Meal Fits Your Day?

Decide by the hour you will be hungry, not by the landmark you will be standing at. If the centre of the day is a Danish lunch of herring, frikadeller or smørrebrød, put it between 11:30 and 15:00 near Amalienborg or off Strøget, and see Rosenborg and the Amalienborg museum around it. If you would rather see the sights at their own pace, take the counters: breakfast at Gasoline Grill Købmagergade from 7:30, a picnic from Torvehallerne for the King's Garden, a bowl at Slurp Borgergade from 17:00, after the castle has shut, and the harbour, Tivoli's Food Hall or Carlsberg Byen for the evening.

The hour you pick also sets the bill. Lunch for two costs 290 kroner at Gasoline Grill Landgreven (two Cheeseburgers and two lemonades, 2 x 110 + 2 x 35), 450 at Slurp Borgergade (two bowls of Nduja Miso and one amazu plate to share, 2 x 195 + 60) and 566 at Restaurant Amalie (a pickled herring and a fried plaice fillet each, 2 x 124 + 2 x 159), with no drinks counted at Slurp or Amalie.

Frequently asked questions

Where can you eat at Tivoli without buying a ticket?

Tivoli Food Hall at Vesterbrogade 3 has free access from the street and a direct door from the gardens. It opens from 11:00, and Dhaba serves Indian small dishes to share. Check the individual stall’s hours before going late.

Which of these places take no table reservation?

Gasoline Grill takes no reservations at any of its sites, and Slurp Borgergade takes none either. Restaurant Amalie says you can simply turn up at Amaliegade 11, and Paludan Bogcafé takes bookings only from groups of six or more, so couples and small groups walk in.

How much does a meal cost near the landmarks?

Most plates cost 100 to 235 kroner. Our main burgers cost 100 to 110 kroner, with the Hot Chicken Sandwich from 130. Smørrebrød starts at 105 kroner at Aamanns Genbo and Slotskælderen, Slurp's bowls cost 175 to 195, and SURT's pizzas start at 165.

Which landmarks close earliest in autumn?

Until 23 December, Rosenborg and the Amalienborg museum both close at 16:00 from Tuesday to Sunday and do not open on Mondays. The lunch kitchens stop earlier still: Slotskælderen's at 15:00 and Restaurant Amalie's at 15:45.
