Where to Eat in Vesterbro and Frederiksberg on a Weeknight in 2026

Three short stretches near home hold a week of Tuesday dinners, from a counter stool on Værnedamsvej to a long shared table in Carlsberg Byen.

TL;DR

For a weeknight in Vesterbro or Frederiksberg, try Gasoline Grill Værnedamsvej or Hija de Sánchez for a short dinner, Les Trois Cochons for a bistro plate, and Anarki for a longer meal. Stay on the side of town where you already are, and check when the kitchen stops.

Værnedamsvej is short enough to walk down before deciding whether to cook at home. At one end there is a counter dinner. A few doors on, a bistro gives you a reason to leave the bike locked up a little longer. On a weeknight, that difference is more useful than any list of the city’s best tables.

Stay near the streets you already know: Værnedamsvej for a counter or bistro, Vesterbrogade and Kødbyen for tacos and sharing plates, or Carlsberg Byen for dinner on the old brewery grounds. Choose by how much evening you want to spend at the table.

Why Should a Weeknight Dinner Stay Close to Home?

A weeknight dinner is a different decision from a Saturday, because the evening is short and tomorrow starts early. On a Friday you can cross the city for a famous table and stay until midnight. On a Tuesday the trip there and back eats the time you meant to spend at the table, and the booking you forgot is the one that sinks the plan.

So think in streets, not in lists. Vesterbro and Frederiksberg meet along Værnedamsvej, the small shopping street on the line between the two districts, and within reach of it you can find three kinds of evening:

  • Short, under an hour: a counter seat or a bowl, no booking, home by eight.
  • Medium, about an hour and a half: a bistro plate and a glass of wine.
  • Long, close to two hours: shared plates or a set menu, booked ahead.

The sections below walk the streets from Værnedamsvej south to Carlsberg Byen, and each place carries its dish and the kind of evening it suits.

Where Should You Eat on Værnedamsvej and the Frederiksberg Side?

Værnedamsvej is not even a quarter of a mile long, short enough to walk end to end before you decide, and it holds the full range from a counter stool to a long bistro dinner. Through the 1800s it was known as butchers' street for its many butcher's shops, and a French school here gave it the nickname Little Paris. Both still show tonight, with beef at number 2 and French bistro cooking at number 10. Start here if you live on the Frederiksberg side or near Vesterbrogade.

Where Can You Sit at a Counter on Værnedamsvej?

Gasoline Grill Værnedamsvej, at number 2, is the short evening. When it opened in August 2019, Studio David Thulstrup built the narrow room around a stainless-steel open kitchen, with a light brown terrazzo floor scattered with red and white pebbles under a stucco ceiling. Around the counter stand 25 bar stools made for this room: a model called Tank, designed by Thulstrup and made with the German furniture label e15.

That counter is what makes it work on a Tuesday. You order, sit facing the open kitchen and watch it cook your burger. Try our Butterburger, inspired by a classic from the American heartland: beef with red onion, pickles and a large spread of salted butter, at 110 kroner on the Værnedamsvej menu. We suggest adding cheese, and regular fries cost 40 more. The room has indoor seats only, takes no reservations, and opens every day from 11:00 until the day's beef is sold out.

Where Can You Have a Glass of Wine and a Bistro Plate?

Further along the street, Les Trois Cochons at Værnedamsvej 10 takes the Little Paris nickname at its word. It is a Parisian bistro run by the Cofoco group, with a checkered floor and a true bistro menu: its moules frites, mussels in white wine and garlic with fries, cost 195 kroner on the menu that runs to 30 December, and confit duck leg comes with white beans in celeriac cream, cavolo nero and braised endive for 225. The roasted celeriac with savoy cabbage, truffles and a foamy sauce is the vegetarian main at 195. Dinner starts at 17:30, and from Sunday to Wednesday the latest arrival is 21:00, so a table booked for 19:00 leaves plenty of slack.

Where Should You Go for a Longer Evening in Frederiksberg?

Anarki at Vodroffsvej 47, near the city lakes, is the long evening on the Frederiksberg side. It opened in 2015 and is owned and run today by Dan Rauhe Christensen and Simon Madsen, who also run Restaurant Mêlée. The Michelin Guide calls it an "unfussy, proudly run neighbourhood restaurant", and its name, Danish for anarchy, is a nod to its ethos: the bistro kitchen is the starting point, and the menu of shared plates draws on produce and seasonings from around the world.

The menu of 20 October suggests three or four shared servings each, such as duck hearts on toast for 165 kroner, or an Iberico schnitzel with salad, béchamel and crisp ham for 275. A family-style run of five servings costs 495 a head and must be chosen by the whole table. It takes in a crudo of pikeperch with citrus, ancho chilli and grilled avocado, and braised veal with beetroot, Treviso and smoked marrow.

Book: it opens Tuesday to Saturday from 17:30, with the kitchen open to 22:00, and it does not list Monday opening. On Sunday it serves a fixed menu only, with the kitchen closing at 20:30.

Where Can You Eat Around Istedgade, Vesterbrogade and Kødbyen?

South of Vesterbrogade, a taqueria in Kødbyen gives a short evening a different shape: choose the tacos, eat, and leave the rest of the night free.

Where Is the Quickest Walk-In Meal?

In the meatpacking quarter, where the White Meatpacking District opened in April 1934 and is still owned by the city, Hija de Sánchez at Slagterboderne 8 is a taqueria that has served Kødbyen since April 2016. It was the second site for Rosio Sánchez, the former Noma pastry chef, who opened her first taqueria in 2015 after nearly seven years in that kitchen. When olive magazine profiled her in 2017, the team was importing corn from Oaxaca and stone-grinding it on site for fresh tortillas every day, because the European varieties she tested fell short.

On a weeknight it suits the late short evening: it opens from 11:00 to 21:00 from Sunday to Thursday, and its site offers no table booking for this branch. Start with the taco it calls famous. Three Tacos al Pastor, with pork, pineapple, jalapeño salsa, onion and coriander on corn tortillas, cost 140 kroner on its ordering menu; the barbacoa tacos of slow-cooked marinated beef and the potato guisado tacos with grilled kale cost the same.

Where Can You Share Plates for an Hour and a Half?

On Vesterbrogade itself, Delphine at number 40 cooks food from the Greek islands and southern Italy on a large Parilla grill, which takes whole fish and shellfish as well as skewers of meat and vegetables. This is Cofoco again, in a room with high ceilings and a large bar that pours ouzo, pitchers and cocktails, about as far from the fridge at home as a short walk gets.

The crispy aubergine, with roasted tomato sauce, mozzarella and herbs, costs 175 kroner and the grilled chicken, with green beans and artichokes, 195, with tzatziki and sourdough flatbread at 65 each to share. From Sunday to Thursday it opens at 17:30 and takes its last guests at 21:15.

Restaurant Cofoco at Abel Cathrines Gade 7 is the bright basement where the Cofoco group, the Copenhagen Food Collective behind Les Trois Cochons and Delphine, started in 2004. It was founded on the belief that a good meal should not be expensive and that restaurants should make it possible to eat out often, which is the whole case for dinner on a Tuesday.

The plates are small and made for sharing, and the kitchen starts from Danish ingredients before heading to the Mediterranean or further afield. Order à la carte, with lobster bisque with scallop, green apple and fennel at 125 kroner and croquettes with morels and Iberico ham at 75, or take four courses for 400, ending on a cherry sorbet with vanilla, marzipan and white chocolate. A green four courses costs the same. The whole table must order the set menu together, which takes the choosing out of a tired evening.

What Is There for a Weeknight in Carlsberg Byen?

Carlsberg Byen, on the old brewery ground south of Vesterbro, is the choice when you live at the Enghave or Valby end. Production moved out to Fredericia at the end of 2008, which freed the site for the new district that fills it now. Dolores at Kildepladsen 12 is a food and wine bar from the LOCA group, named after the oldest quarter of San Francisco's Mission District, and its shared comfort dishes take their lead from that neighbourhood's mix of food cultures.

On the dinner menu of 21 October, Korean fried mushrooms from Funga Farm with gochujang and sesame cost 165 kroner and a chicken thigh tikka masala with coconut rice 250, and the list wanders on to pad thai with homemade noodles at 155. The set menu, Jorden Rundt or round the world, puts three snacks, four sharing dishes and a dessert on the table for 495. It opens at 17:00 from Tuesday to Saturday, with the kitchen open to 22:00, and lists no hours for Sunday or Monday, so it is a long evening for any night from Tuesday.

For the short evening nearby, Gasoline Grill Carlsberg Byen on Bryggernes Plads is the older sibling of the Værnedamsvej counter, by three months in 2019. Here guests gather around one large counter, where talk between diners and cooks tends to start by itself. It opens every day from 11:00 until sold out, with indoor and outdoor seating and no reservations.

For our seasonal Green Burger, we cook whole vegetables to order. Right now that means a Portobello mushroom with cheddar, tomato, crisp lettuce, red onion, pickles, Gasoline Grill Sauce and herb oil, for 100 kroner on the Carlsberg Byen menu.

Which Places Fit a Short, Medium or Long Weeknight?

Gasoline Grill comes first; the other places follow the order of the sections above.

Which Places Close on Monday and Tuesday, and When Should You Book?

Monday can catch you out. Anarki does not list Monday opening and Dolores lists no Monday hours. Check your chosen kitchen if you are setting out late; closing time is not always the latest time to order.

  • Walk in: Gasoline Grill takes no reservations, and Hija de Sánchez Kødbyen offers no booking on its site.
  • Book for a set time: Anarki and Restaurant Cofoco.
  • Book or check ahead: Les Trois Cochons, Delphine and Dolores all take online bookings.

Two moules frites at Les Trois Cochons cost 390 kroner and two family-style menus at Anarki 990, before drinks. At Gasoline Grill Værnedamsvej, two Cheeseburgers, fries to share and two lemonades come to 330 kroner (2 x 110 + 40 + 2 x 35).

Is Gasoline Grill Værnedamsvej Good for a Quick Weeknight Dinner?

Yes, as long as you arrive before the beef runs out. Gasoline Grill Værnedamsvej opens every day from 11:00, takes no reservations and seats you indoors at the counter, so a weeknight dinner there needs no plan at all: walk in, order a Cheeseburger for 110 kroner and eat it hot.

We call our Cheeseburger The Benchmark: beef with creamy cheddar, red onion, pickles and Gasoline Grill Sauce, and you can ask for an extra patty. With fries and a drink, the combo starts at 155 kroner. The homemade lemonade with elderflower costs 35, and a child can have the Kids Burger, cooked well done with ketchup, from 90.

The one thing to plan around is the sell-out. Every Gasoline Grill closes when the day's beef is gone, and no closing time is promised. The ordering page lists pick-up at Værnedamsvej from 11:00 to 20:00, and you can pre-order through the Gasoline Grill app, so on a late, busy evening it pays to check the app before you leave home rather than find the door locked.

What Should You Choose Tonight?

Back at 18:40 on that Tuesday, the half lemon and the mustard can stay in the fridge, and the only question left is how long you want to be out. Answer it, then walk.

  • Short: Gasoline Grill Værnedamsvej for a counter seat, or Hija de Sánchez for tacos in Kødbyen.
  • Medium: moules frites at Les Trois Cochons or a plate from Delphine’s grill.
  • Long: book Anarki for its family-style dinner or check the evening at Dolores in Carlsberg Byen.
