An empty booking calendar is not an empty city. Start with the kind of seat you need, then choose the meal close enough to save your evening.

Try Gasoline Grill or Slurp Borgergade for a meal without reservations, Torvehallerne for separate counter orders, or Dhaba by Central Station. If you need to sit together, ask about space before ordering. A place that takes walk-ins can still be full.
A restaurant can have five empty tables and still turn you away. They might all be booked. At a ramen counter you can wait for the next stool, and at a market stall you can order without needing one at all. These are three different answers to the same problem: you are hungry, and nobody is expecting you.
In Copenhagen, look close to where you are. If you need a table, try a room that takes walk-ins and allow for a wait. If you just want dinner, a bánh mì or an empanada can spare you the search. The nine options below take you through the old city, Nørreport, Nørrebro, Vesterbro and Central Station.
Choose the service before you choose the dish. A couple who can wait for two stools has more options than six people who need to sit together. If everyone is already hungry, pick somewhere with a takeaway route rather than treating an empty booking calendar as the end of dinner.
| Place | Order | Seating or fallback |
|---|---|---|
| Gasoline Grill, centre | Cheeseburger | No reservations; branch seating differs |
| Slurp Borgergade | Veggie ramen | 36 seats; no reservations |
| District Tonkin | Lemongrass chicken bánh mì | Dine in if space; takeaway |
| Hija de Sanchez, Torvehallerne | Seasonal tacos | Indoor market stall |
| La Boca | Empanadas | Small eating bar |
| Omegn & Venner | Seasonal handmad | Eating bar; changing menu |
| GRØD Jægersborggade | Mushroom barley risotto | No reservations; takeaway available |
| mother, Meatpacking District | Wood-fired sourdough pizza | Ask for a table; takeaway fallback |
| Dhaba, Tivoli Food Hall | Samosas and momos | Food-hall seating, not a reserved table |
Stay in the centre when your day ends there. You can move between a proper restaurant meal and food to carry away without committing to a second sightseeing trip. The trade-off is simple: the more you need a particular table, the less useful a walk-in recommendation becomes.
At Borgergade 16, Slurp has 36 seats and takes no reservations. It is a ramen shop built around the bowl rather than a multi-course dinner, so it suits a solo visitor or a small party willing to wait. This branch opened in January 2025 as a roomier second shop to the 22-seat original on Nansensgade.
Order the Veggie ramen: mushroom and celeriac broth with oyster mushroom, egg, kale, pickled fennel, red onion and lemon thyme, at 175 kroner. The mushroom broth makes this a different meal from a quick sandwich, and the egg means the standard bowl is vegetarian, not vegan; ask for the vegan version if needed. Borgergade serves lunch from 11:30 to 15:00 and dinner from 17:00 to 22:00. That afternoon break matters if you have skipped lunch.

District Tonkin at Store Kongensgade 71 has served this street since 2015, near the Marble Church. Its Vietnamese menu is useful because not every dish needs a dining-room table. The lemongrass chicken bánh mì has cucumber, leeks, coriander, chilli, pepper mayonnaise and the house sweet-spicy sauce in a crisp baguette, for 86 kroner.
Choose that for takeaway, or ask for a table and order the beef pho with rice noodles, bean sprouts, garlic oil, herbs and lime. Pho is dine-in only here. A recommendation to “just get it to go” would fail precisely when that is the dish you came for.
Gasoline Grill is a natural stop when the rest of the day is still unsettled. At Landgreven 10, seating is outdoors only; at Købmagergade 23, there is seating indoors and out. Neither takes reservations. Choose the latter when shelter is essential, while remembering that indoor seating is not a seat held for you.
The Landgreven Cheeseburger, our Benchmark, costs 110 kroner and brings cheddar, red onion, pickles and Gasoline Grill sauce together without turning lunch into a long menu decision. The second option is the Green Burger: currently portobello with cheddar, tomato, lettuce, red onion, pickles and herb oil, at 100 kroner. Both branches list it, but its vegetable changes with the season.
Gasoline Grill began at Landgreven in 2016, in a former petrol station. Choose a burger, add fries if you want them, and decide whether to stay or carry on. Both branches serve burgers from 11:00 until sold out. Pre-order through the Gasoline Grill app if useful, but a food order does not reserve a table.

At Torvehallerne, choosing separate counters is easier than finding one restaurant menu everyone agrees on. Buying from one stall after another has a long history on this square: Israels Plads held Grønttorvet, the vegetable market, from 1889 to 1958, and the two market halls opened here in September 2011. Treat it as lunch or an early meal: normal market hours are 10:00 to 19:00 on weekdays and 10:00 to 18:00 at weekends, with some stalls keeping longer hours. Buying food does not guarantee that your whole party can sit together.
Rosio Sanchez brought her Mexican food culture to Hija de Sanchez at Torvehallerne after cooking at Noma. The tacos start with the masa, the dough behind every tortilla, and the corn comes from Mexico to be milled for it. There is an indoor stall as well as the outdoor stand used in summer, so do not dismiss it when the weather turns; its shelves also sell masa, fresh tortillas, totopos and salsas to take home. The fillings change with the season; choose from what is on the day rather than travelling for an old menu favourite. In the morning, from 10:00 to noon, the breakfast burrito wraps egg, cheese and coriander in a flour tortilla with salsa roja.
La Boca is an Argentine-led Latin American deli with a small eating bar and an open kitchen. Andrew, behind the counter, stocks goods from small independent Latin American producers, makes chimichurri and carries more than 15 chilli sauces. The empanadas are the reason to stop: 12 flavours at a time, changed regularly and served hot, such as beef braised in Malbec with portobello and truffle, Peruvian lamb with aji amarillo, or lentils and black beans in a spicy mole. Pick several for a meal, or keep it to one or two if dinner will happen later.
Omegn & Venner combines a grocery shop with an eating bar, drawing its food from the shop’s changing produce. Denny and Sarah run it on a zero-waste policy, so the eating-bar menu is rarely the same two days running. The handmad, a small open sandwich, is a good way into that approach, and the bar list currently includes chicken liver parfait with pickles, pâté en croûte, yellow split pea hummus and canned seafood with lemon, with daily specials on the board from 11:00 to 16:00. Choose it for an unfixed lunch, not when your whole party wants the same dish seen in a photograph. Ask what is being served and whether there is room before settling in.
Cross the Lakes if Nørrebro is where you want to spend the evening: a bowl on Jægersborggade can be dinner in its own right. If you are already heading west, stay with the Meatpacking District. A second trip across town to avoid one queue can simply deliver you to another.
GRØD at Jægersborggade 50 began in a former bicycle shop in autumn 2011. Its savoury bowls make clear why porridge need not mean breakfast. Order mushroom barley risotto with Gammel Knas cheese, pickled mushrooms and thyme, at 109 kroner, or red lentil daal with tomatoes, coriander, skyr and salted almonds, at 99.
GRØD takes no table reservations, and you can phone to ask about space. This branch stays open until 20:00 daily. It is a better evening choice than arriving at the Torvehallerne branch after the market has shut.
mother at Høkerboderne 9 to 15 opened in 2010 as one of the first restaurants in the Meatpacking District, and calls itself “an utterly Italian restaurant without all the nonsense”. The food centres on sourdough pizza from a wood-fired oven, with roasted vegetables, fish and meat also coming from the fire. Go for the pizza when you want a meal that can carry a relaxed evening rather than a brief stop at a counter.
It accepts reservations, so ask whether there is a table instead of assuming one. The official site links a takeaway service if the room is full. For a spontaneous weekday lunch, pizzas cost 100 kroner from 11:00 to 17:00; do not carry that price into dinner.
At Tivoli Food Hall, you can come in from the street without a ticket to the Gardens. Try Dhaba if you want a meal to share before your train. Check that there is room before ordering if you need everyone to sit together.
Dhaba serves Indian small plates family style, from a quick-service menu of selected dishes. Order several if you want dinner rather than a snack: three samosas with potato, peas and coriander chutney are 49 kroner, six spiced momos are 59, and lamb karahi with potatoes, at 159, gives the table something richer. Ask for extra chilli on your own portion if your companion prefers less heat. The small plates make it easy for two people to taste across the table.
Yes. Gasoline Grill Landgreven and Gasoline Grill Købmagergade do not take reservations. Queue at the restaurant or pre-order through the Gasoline Grill app. Landgreven has outdoor seating only; Købmagergade has indoor and outdoor seating. Burgers start at 11:00 at both, and service ends when sold out rather than at a guaranteed late closing time.
For a central meal, pick the branch by where you are and whether you need shelter. The Købmagergade menu lists a burger, fries and drink combo from 155 kroner. Pre-ordering sorts out the food collection, not a place to sit.
If the next stool comes free and you want the bowl, take it. If the room is full, keep the next move small: order something to carry away, or try a counter nearby. For a group that needs one table, ask about seats first. The evening can still work without crossing the city for another chance.
A food hall lets people order separately, but seats together depend on what is free. If your group must sit at one table at a fixed time, ring a restaurant that takes reservations instead of relying on a small walk-in room.
No. Tivoli Food Hall has free entry from the street. You can eat there without buying admission to Tivoli Gardens; individual kitchens can close earlier than the hall.
GRØD serves mushroom barley risotto and lentil daal and takes no reservations. Slurp’s Veggie ramen includes egg and can be made vegan. Gasoline Grill’s Green Burger is vegetarian; do not assume it is vegan.
No. A pickup order arranges food collection, not seating. At Gasoline Grill, choose the branch for its indoor or outdoor seating and assess available space separately from the order.
Gasoline Grill started in a petrol-station kiosk on Landgreven in 2016. We grind our beef fresh every day and cook every burger to order. Here, we share food stories and places to eat around Copenhagen, from a quick lunch to a slower evening.
