A good date leaves room to change the plan. Choose between a quick counter meal, a booked bistro table and dinner that turns into drinks.

Choose a meal that matches how long you want to stay: Gasoline Grill Værnedamsvej for an easy counter dinner, Slurp Borgergade for ramen without booking, Les Trois Cochons for a bistro table, or Goldfinch for Chinese sharing plates. Reserve when a particular table matters; keep the rest of the evening flexible.
The bill comes and neither of you reaches for a coat. That is a good moment on a date, and the room has something to do with it. A counter can make dinner easy; a table that feels comfortable after the plates have gone leaves room for the evening to continue.
Choose which sort of night you want before choosing an address. Copenhagen has bistro tables on Værnedamsvej, small plates in Kødbyen and tacos near the Nordhavn waterfront. Some are worth booking. Others leave room for a walk afterwards and a decision you haven’t made yet.
The first decision is whether you want to sit opposite each other for the evening or eat and move on. For the former, Les Trois Cochons gives Værnedamsvej a Parisian bistro in a former butcher's shop: a checked floor, one wall of small-paned windows from an old porcelain factory, and a menu that makes dinner easy to picture.
Moules frites come with white wine and garlic; grilled ribeye comes with béarnaise or Madagascar pepper sauce; roasted celeriac with savoy cabbage and truffles gives a main without meat. The small seafood platter of langoustine, scallop, crab salad, oyster and peel-and-eat prawns is listed as ideal for two, which makes it the natural opening. Crème brûlée comes with blackcurrant sorbet, if neither of you is ready to leave. Dinner starts at 17:30. Book a table rather than treating the pavement seating as your November fallback.
A few doors away, Gasoline Grill Værnedamsvej changes the shape of the date. This is an indoor counter diner, not a full-service bistro. Choose it when you want dinner without making dinner the whole evening, and are happy to take the seats available rather than reserve a table for two.
The Cheeseburger puts cheddar, red onion, pickles and Gasoline Grill Sauce around the beef. The Hot Chicken Sandwich takes a different route, Nashville hot chicken with a little Korean flavour: chicken thigh marinated in Gasoline Grill Spicy Mix, coleslaw, pickles and lettuce, with a choice of heat. That gives two people a real choice without turning the meal into a long order. Leave room for the lemon mousse with shortbread crunch, or chocolate mousse with brownie crunch, if a small dessert suits you better than a second stop.
The practical limit matters: there are no reservations, and service ends when sold out. An app pre-order arranges food, not two seats. If a guaranteed table is essential, choose the bistro instead.

For a longer meal without changing neighbourhood, Spuntino has been on Vesterbro since 2010. Its Italian menu runs from small antipasti to homemade pasta and Neapolitan pizza, on small and large plates made for sharing, so you can decide how much evening to give it. Rigatoni alla vodka come with tomato, burrata, chilli and basil; spinach and ricotta ravioli come with sage and pine nuts; mafaldine take roasted mushrooms, salsiccia, mascarpone and gremolata.
Order à la carte for different appetites, or choose the set menu together. The restaurant takes bookings and opens for dinner at 17:30. This menu runs to 9 November, so check the dishes if your date falls later. It makes more sense than a counter meal when you want several courses, not just somewhere to eat before going out.
At Delphine, the route turns towards the Greek islands and southern Italy, in a large, bright room with blue Mediterranean motifs across the walls. The large Parilla grill handles whole fish, shellfish and skewers, but a date can start simply with tzatziki and sourdough flatbread, or with a pair of oysters under pickled rose and shallots. Add hortopita, a pastry with spinach, ricotta, feta and sesame, or grilled chicken with green beans and artichokes.
This is a useful middle ground between one plate each and a fixed procession of courses. Book an indoor table on Vesterbrogade; order enough substantial food as well as the dips. The citrus pavlova, with vanilla cream, lemon ice cream, oranges, raspberries and pistachio, is explicitly sized for two, which settles the last decision.
If sharing tastes is more appealing than choosing a menu together, head into Kødbyen. Mother opened here in 2010, as one of the first restaurants in the Meatpacking District, and centres its kitchen on organic sourdough seawater pizza from a wood-fired oven. That is the reason to choose it: two pizzas make a meal whose size and pace you control, rather than a tasting menu chosen in advance. The oven also cooks fish, meat and vegetables, so pizza need not dictate both orders.
The sourdough reaches the glass too: the house IPA and pilsner are built on the yeasts that give the pizzas their tang. Reserve through the restaurant's site for an indoor dinner. Its weekday pizza offer runs only until 17:00; do not build an evening budget around a lunch price.
On Gasværksvej, Jah Izakaya gives sharing a Japanese rhythm. Its roots are in Omonim, one of Copenhagen's first Japanese restaurants. When the owners retired in 2016, their daughter Ulla Inoue, from a line of izakaya owners, took it on with her husband Satoru and two old friends; the result combines izakaya food with a love of reggae.
Agedashi tofu comes in dashi, pork gyoza arrive five to a portion, and karaage adds fried chicken to the table. The seasonal list changes around them, and currently includes oyster tempura with shiso, aubergine and clam dashi. Book if you have a particular evening in mind. Dishes arrive in no set order, and the kitchen recommends three to five per person. Choose it for trying things together, not for two synchronised main courses or an assumed hushed room.
For seafood, Kødbyens Fiskebar keeps the industrial setting of the old meat market rather than dressing dinner up as a formal occasion. You still enter beneath Einar Utzon-Frank's 1933 concrete bull, and when the restaurant opened in 2009 in an old butcher's shop, its designers kept the broken tiles and peeling paint. At the time, a fish dinner in Copenhagen meant a white tablecloth or sushi; this room was built as the casual alternative.
Start with oysters, then choose from the fish and shellfish available that day. The menu published in June lists Limfjorden blue mussels steamed in apple cider with herbs and double cream, and fish'n'chips with lightly smoked cod. That menu is an example, so a particular fish is a possibility rather than a promise. You can reserve a table or walk in and ask for a bar seat. The evening kitchen runs from 17:30 to 23:00. For a seafood date, that distinction between a booked table and a chance at the bar is more useful than calling the whole restaurant walk-in.
Cross to Nørrebro when the walk is part of your evening, not a journey made for one famous table. Scarpetta Rantzausgade suits the couple who cannot agree between pasta and pizza. A Margherita with tomato, buffalo mozzarella and basil gives one person a simple order; the other can take rigatoni with mushrooms, porcini, lemon and parsley, or ravioli of duck confit with rosemary, black kale and hazelnut.
The name is the Italian word for the last piece of bread used to soak up the sauce on a plate, a fair description of the meal's priorities. The kitchen starts from classic Italian flavours and looks for ingredients from the sides of Italy that few Copenhageners know. Book an indoor table from 17:30. This menu runs to 30 December.
For a dinner linked to the Lakes, Hanzō Nørrebro sits at Sortedam Dossering 5, with the water just across the road. The dinner menu crosses Asian borders without hesitation: Korean fried chicken bao with gochujang, gua bao of braised duck with hoisin and peanuts, crispy tiger prawns with teriyaki, and pork dumplings with dashi, roasted peanuts and chilli crunch. Most dishes are for sharing, arriving steadily rather than as one main course each, and ten shared servings for the whole table cost 450 kroner per person if you would rather not choose.
There are around 70 seats indoors, so choose it for a lively restaurant rather than the intimacy of a tiny dining room. Book a table if you want to build an evening around that location. Outdoor seats exist, but an indoor reservation is the practical choice for a November date beside the water.
Back in the centre, Slurp Borgergade suits a date that needs a real dinner but not a whole schedule. Open since January 2025, this second room of the small-menu ramen shop has a useful distinction from its Nansensgade sibling: Borgergade serves pork gyoza at dinner, four dumplings filled with cabbage, ginger and spring onion, with soy dressing. Share those before a bowl each if you want the meal to stretch a little.
The Shio combines chicken, smoked mackerel and seafood broth with pork neck, egg and daikon. It is a different choice from the creamy, spicy Nduja Miso, not simply the same bowl with a different topping. Pick the broth you each want rather than ordering alike for convenience. Each bowl also has a hot tea matched to it, sencha with the Shio and roasted buckwheat sobacha with the Nduja Miso, so the meal works just as well if neither of you is drinking.
There are 36 seats and no reservations. Dinner runs from 17:00 to 22:00, with an afternoon break before it. This is an easy meal for two who can tolerate a wait, not the answer when a guaranteed start time or a long private table matters.

A few streets away, Goldfinch hides in the courtyard behind Esmée at Kongens Nytorv 8. Its Cantonese cooking draws on the childhood food memories of Will King-Smith, a former head chef at Geranium, and in a room of warm red and burgundy, rotating centres on the tables make sharing literal. Try pork wontons with black vinegar, chilli oil and coriander, followed by honey-and-rose-glazed char siu pork neck and rice, and finish with Hong Kong-style French toast and evaporated milk ice cream. Book if you want certainty; the restaurant also keeps some room for walk-ins. It suits a couple who want to taste several dishes together. It is less suited to someone who wants one self-contained plate and no discussion over the order.
If you want the evening to continue towards cocktails, Llama brings Latin American influences to Lille Kongensgade. It opened in 2014 as one of the first Copenhagen restaurants to look to Latin America, and it has a refreshed room this year; the menu moves from Peru and Argentina north to Mexico while staying rooted in local produce.
A Baja taco holds panko-breaded cod, arbol chilli mayonnaise, cabbage and coriander; halibut ceviche comes with roasted-tomato leche de tigre, cucumber and avocado. These are sharing dishes, with three to four recommended per person, so a taco price is not a whole-dinner budget. Reserve rather than leaving the table to chance. On Fridays and Saturdays DJs begin at 21:00. That makes it a deliberate choice for a livelier date, and a reason to choose an earlier sitting if talking is the priority.
Finally, choose Nordhavn because that is where you want to spend the evening, not because every date needs to end in the centre. Hija de Sanchez Nordhavn opened in 2019 in a dining room on the corner of Hamborg Plads, at number 5, with tacos, cocktails and churros. The name began with Rosio Sánchez, a former head pastry chef at Noma, who opened the first Hija de Sanchez in June 2015. Unlike the assumption that a taqueria must mean takeaway, this branch takes reservations.
Build dinner around tacos: the branch's online menu lists cochinita with slow-cooked achiote pork and red pickled onions, barbacoa with slow-cooked beef, onion and coriander, and potato guisado with grilled kale and jalapeño salsa. Leave room for the churro, fried choux pastry with cinnamon sugar and a seasonal dip, and ask about the seasonal specials when ordering. It closes at 21:00 Sunday to Thursday and 22:00 Friday and Saturday, so put the meal before a late waterfront wander, not after it.
There is no single winner here. Keep the meal short when you have another plan, and reserve when the table itself is the plan. The trade-off column matters as much as the food.

Two portions of Spuntino’s rigatoni alla vodka at 155 kroner each cost 310 kroner before drinks. At a sharing restaurant, the bill depends on how many rounds you order. Use the current menu to plan for two, especially if you want snacks or dessert as well as a main.
Gasoline Grill Værnedamsvej is the fit when relaxed means an indoor counter, a short menu and no reservation. At Værnedamsvej 2, you can make dinner a Cheeseburger or Hot Chicken Sandwich rather than a full evening of courses. Go earlier if your plans depend on eating there: the branch opens daily from 11:00 and closes when sold out. It cannot promise two neighbouring seats or a reserved table, so choose it for a flexible date rather than a fixed special-occasion arrangement.
Pick one thing to secure: the table, the neighbourhood or the food you both want. The rest can stay loose. A casual date does not need the longest menu or the latest closing time. It needs a meal that leaves you both wanting to carry on talking, whether that happens over dessert or on the walk afterwards.
SEE GASOLINE GRILL VÆRNEDAMSVEJ
Gasoline Grill Værnedamsvej and Slurp Borgergade do not take reservations. Goldfinch keeps some room for walk-ins, and Kødbyens Fiskebar invites walk-ins to ask for a bar seat. None guarantees immediate seating, so reserve elsewhere if the start time matters.
Jah Izakaya serves Japanese small dishes in no set order, Goldfinch offers Cantonese sharing plates, and Llama recommends three to four Latin American dishes per person.
For a table-led dinner, book Les Trois Cochons. At Llama, the room becomes livelier when the DJs start on Fridays and Saturdays, so check the time if you want a quieter conversation.
Hija de Sanchez Nordhavn has a dining room at Hamborg Plads 5 and accepts reservations. It serves tacos, cocktails and churros, with seasonal specials. Closing is 21:00 Sunday to Thursday and 22:00 Friday and Saturday, so eat before a late walk.
Gasoline Grill started in a petrol-station kiosk on Landgreven in 2016. We grind our beef fresh every day and cook every burger to order. Here, we share food stories and places to eat around Copenhagen, from a quick lunch to a slower evening.
